Description
Objective The objectives for this course are located on two levels, (i) on the disciplinary level, specifically in digital humanities, and (ii) on the level of general scholarly competences, in particular in the use and peruse of scholarly publications. Objectives thus include: - Obtaining an overview of the field of digital humanities. - Acquiring a deeper understanding of methods and research approaches specifically in the context of historical research. - Learning to independently analyze research reports with respect to the interplay of humanities research questions and computer science methods and tools. - Transfering concepts from other courses to papers read in this course, in particular with respect to modeling. - Evaluating approaches to modeling from neighboring disciplines with respect to their applicability to historical research questions. - Gaining an insight into different research cultures and their forms of publications in the field of digital humanities. - Critical reading of and reflection on scholarly publications. - Jointly developing an understanding of scholarly work in plenary and small group sessions and presenting the results. Content The course aims to lay a foundation and to complement other courses in the program of studies through the reading and discussion of key texts and research literature. Correspondingly, the reading list comprises both theoretical texts as well as reports on specific research projects illustrating particular approaches or methods.
